I'll give you my best understanding of the word "noir" without actually looking it up. Which means, I could be completely wrong.
Anyway, if I remember correctly, noir (or maybe it's "noire") is the French word for "dark." Also, there is a certain style of film commonly referred to as "noir" that tends to use a lot of black-and-white and gray imagery. Often, detective stories taking place in the 1920's era are referred to as "noir."
